RETURN TO NETWORKING STRATEGIES
Keys to Successful Networking
By Terri Mrosko
Successful networking takes practice. Some people are naturally more adept at it than others. To make the most of your networking opportunities, keep in mind these tips.
Networking means:
Commitment - take time to develop the relationship.
Giving and Getting - both sides need to receive a benefit, either now or later.
Listening - take notes and really hear what others are telling you.
Curiosity - look for clues to stimulate conversation and interest.
Follow up - do what you say you are going to do, when you say you are going to do it.
Asking for help - be specific about what you need.
Consuming knowledge - keep abreast of current events and be prepared to share information.
Courage - going solo to a networking function can be rewarding.
Remembering - people, ideas and resources.
Patience - it doesn’t happen overnight or all at once.
Being courteous - treat others as you wish to be treated.
Involvement - become active in your networking or support groups. Volunteer to be on a committee.
Believing in what you do - let your passion and experience show.
Networking is not done in a vacuum. Networking is an ongoing process. It is a mindset. You must consistently and consciously be in tune to networking opportunities and take advantage of them whenever possible.
