Do You Have a Web Site?

As a writer or small business owner, is it really necessary to have a Web site?

The answer is a resounding "Yes!" In today's competitive marketplace, it is imperative to continuously find ways to market your business or your skills. One of the best and most convenient ways to keep your name out there is to have a presence on the Web.

You do not have to be an e-commerce site to be on the Web. The best thing you can do for your customers is provide advice in your particular area of expertise. The more visitors you get to your site, the more your name and knowledge base gets known. Word of mouth (or e-mail) can be a remarkable way to gain new business.

So now that I've talked you into creating a Web site for your company, where do you go from here? You say you don't know a thing about Web design and what the heck is "HTML" anyway? Just how do you go about finding someone with the knowledge to help design the site?

A good place to start is to ask someone you trust with a site of their own. Find out the process they followed to either create it or the name of the company they hired to create it. If you like their site, perhaps you can hire the same company to do your site.

For my iwritesite.com Web site, I wanted to do most of the work myself. I felt in my line of work, which includes writing Web content, it was necessary for me to learn something about the skill of Web design. So following my own advice, I discussed my options with a knowledgeable individual who recommended a template product that allows me to create the look and content of my site with absolutely no knowledge of HTML or other coding.

In addition to the template program, I did teach myself some basic HTML to enhance the look of my content. The whole process was painless and my site launched in less than a month.
