Using Networking to Startup Your Business

My brother and I worked part-time in the catering industry for 15 years before deciding to start our own “mobile entertainment” business. As third-party observers at weddings and social gatherings, we concluded that what the customer needs is someone else to “sweat the details” and take control of the event.

We realized that to be successful, a disc jockey must be in tune with the crowd and set the mood for the entire occasion. We saw hysterical brides anguish over guests who either refused to get up and dance or left the event early. We knew we could make a difference in the business by paying attention to detail and learning all we could about the industry.

Seven months of strategizing led to conducting online research, viewing training tapes and making contacts with other DJ’s, some of which were nationally renown for expanding into other endeavors such as videography and karaoke. Keeping current with what the market is offering is important.

We continue to meet other DJ’s on site and see what may or may not be working for them. Most enjoy sharing their war stories (a mispronounced guest name; the loss of electrical power; or fire alarms activated by fog machines). It is comforting to know that even the biggest name DJ’s have their embarrassing moments.

We learned how well you recover and get on with the show is what keeps your company a cut above the rest.
