RETURN TO WRITING STRATEGIES
The Writer’s Edge
Tips for the Freelance Writer - By Terri Mrosko
Steps to Commitment
If you want to succeed as a freelance writer, you must make a commitment to follow through.
You need to set goals and commit to those goals. If you say you will write something everyday, then do it. If you say you will query new markets each week, then do it. If you say you will call an editor and ask for a new assignment, then do it.
Tell people about your dreams and commitment to becoming a writer. Then go and learn all you can about making your dream a reality. Once you commit to seeing this through, you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.
The best place to start is to formulate a plan and set some goals. Then commit to your goals by following these steps:
-
Visualize your dream.
-
Write down your dream—put it in front of you everywhere you can.
-
Speak your dream—share it with others.
-
Mold it, shape it, define it.
-
Create a mission statement.
-
Set specific goals with time specifications and details.
-
Act upon the goals. Make a checklist and whittle away each and every day.
-
Stay focused.
-
Be persistent and don’t give up. Remember, one step forward and two steps back is normal.
-
Live your goals. Make them a part of who you are. Welcome them and incorporate the goals into your life.
-
Believe you will succeed.
