The Writer’s Edge
Tips for the Freelance Writer - By Terri Mrosko

So You Want to be a Freelance Writer?

When I tell people what I do for a living, I can tell by the look on their face those who are impressed by the intrigue of freelance writing.

Writing for a living was a dream of mine for quite some time. When I first learned of a corporate downsizing at the company I worked at for 20 years, I was thrilled because I knew it meant finally being able to follow the dream.

You don’t have to wait until you lose a job to start pursuing your freelance writing career. Many writers work part time while they are establishing themselves in the field. Others take the plunge all at once like I did and never look back.

Where to start?

For the whole year prior to my last day in the corporate world, I began researching the world of freelance writing. I read all the books I could get my hands on and visited all the websites I could find dedicated to the art of freelance writing. In this series of writing tips, I will share with you things I learned from the books, internet and others on my journey to becoming a freelance writer.

Let me just leave you with a couple of thoughts:

Start local. Look for opportunities within your community or business.

Write what you know. Take a moment to write down all your areas of expertise.
You’ll be surprised.

Read, read, read.
