RETURN TO WRITING STRATEGIES

The Writer’s Edge
Tips for the Freelance Writer - By Terri Mrosko

Writer’s Groups

A good way to network with other writers is to join a writer’s group. These vary from informal gatherings to more formalized weekly or monthly meetings, usually at a local academic setting or public library.

There are also professional organizations for writers including the Society of Professional Journalists, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and local Press Club chapters.

The best way to decide which group is right for you is to spend time "sampling" the different groups by attending functions sponsored by them. Most groups will let you attend one or two before asking you to join. Some groups don’t require you to become a member at all, but will ask you to pay-as-you-go to the meetings, luncheons, or dinners.

Form Your Own Group

Not happy with any of the groups in your area or interested in starting your own writer’s group? Here are some things to think about:

- What you want to get from the group and what you are willing to contribute.
- Find two or more individuals in your area that share your desire for the group.
- Hold some meetings to gauge the interest.
- Plan ahead of time what each meeting will accomplish.
- Decide on a structure for your meetings.
- Be prepared to experience growing pains as your group gels and develops.
- Keep a positive outlook at your meetings.
